On 22nd December, 1914, the 1st King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 6 Brigade, 2nd Division moved into the front line at La Bassée in northern France, with battalion HQ in Cuinchy. The trenches here came under persistent sniper fire and it was this that killed Frederick Woolgar on 24th December.
